The Collaboration is advancing Southern California’s role as a national leader in the identification of goods movement solutions through key initiatives that address the myriad infrastructure, environmental, and quality of life challenges presented by freight movement.

FreightWorks System:  Southern California Delivers the Goods

FreightWorks is an innovative vision for the future goods movement system in Southern California.  Supported by a diverse group of regional and state transportation and resource agencies, this initiative aims to address the goods movement challenges facing the region now and in the future.  Many members of the Collaboration are actively involved in developing, refining, and implementing the FreightWorks system.  One of the primary requirements to create a vision for regional freight movement is an understanding of the existing goods movement system. Goods movement in Southern California is more than just infrastructure.  Its deep-water ports, extensive highway and rail networks, and abundance of warehousing facilities make it the primary gateway to the nation for goods entering the U.S.  In an effort to maintain the enormous national benefits that regional freight offers, Collaboration stakeholders are working closely with regional partners to identify the physical and technical requirements of the freight system through a comprehensive goods movement study.  By developing a consensus definition of the system and its needs, the region can better implement goods movement projects of national significance.  Learn more about the Comprehensive Regional Goods Movement Plan and Implementation Strategy  and view the FreightWorks video

Funding Strategy and Partnerships

Current funding plans at the state and federal levels do not adequately support identified infrastructure expansion and improvements that are necessary to maintain a safe, efficient, and economically viable goods movement system.  The Collaboration is engaging policymakers and private freight industries to clearly link projects of national significance to national funding priorities.

Environmental Process Efficiencies

Ensuring that goods movement projects are designed, implemented and maintained to the highest standards of environmental compliance is critical to a healthy economy and healthy communities in Southern California.  The Collaboration is exploring ways to meet or exceed these standards while delivering projects more efficiently than ever before through new levels of coordination and cooperation among participating agencies.
